Ottawa Now - Retail thefts on the rise in Canada's Capital as business owners keep their guard up

October 27, 2025

Retail thefts are on the rise in Canada’s Capital, as new stats being presented to the Ottawa Police Services Board. It shows that shoplifting offences have skyrocketed by 384 percent over the last 10 years. Meantime, violent crimes and car thefts are also up, but not by as much. Police Chief Eric Stubbs says a number of variables have contributed to the spike, but adds there are no specific type of stores that today’s thieves are targeting. And while he has heard from managers who have expressed concerns about their overall safety, he insists there are policies in place to protect them. Tom Doyle is a Security and Loss Prevention Specialist with Lion Guard Security. He joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
