Can the Conservative Party unite after the Freedom Convoy?
Posted on February 12, 2022
Call it what you will... ’The Karen Convoy’, ‘The Freedom Convoy’ or ‘FluTruxClan’, the two week occupation of downtown Ottawa has claimed one political life, that of Conservative Leader, Erin O’Toole, who was ousted as leader of the party when two thirds of his caucus voted to go in another direction. It will spawn a leadership race for the Tories. Can a new leader stop the party from shooting itself in the foot or unite all the views in the Big Blue Tent?
The so called ‘Freedom Convoy’ has turned downtown Ottawa on its head. It has also ignited similar protests at border crossings in Alberta, Manitoba and Canada’s busiest crossing to the US, the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor. And in just a few days, the interim Conservative Leader, Candice Bergen has flip flopped from supporting the convoy to now telling them to go home. If you were a Conservative supporter, you might wonder what they’ll say tomorrow.
The Conservatives were disappointed in their performance in the last election and mumbling about new leadership has been around since late September. Which direction will the party sail now?

I voted: NoThe Conservatives are too divided and are polarized
when it comes to including all Canadians from coast to coast. The truckers proved that the Conservatives will side with illegal protests instead of caring for the citizens of Ottawa and the borders, and the majority of Canadians that got vaccinated and don't like being called sheep! There are two sides to every coin, and the Cons only see one.
I voted: No
The Conservative Party is definitely not for me. I voted for this party for the first time in the last election, and it will be my last. To see party members pose with protesters was disgraceful, especially when they wanted to over throw the government. If this is the votes you are after, you should move to the United States and join the Republicans. Candice B. should listen more and speak less.
I voted: YesMr. Trudeau has so far made the perfect opportunity for a united Conservative Party. Canadas' reputation as a free and democratic nation has been ruined by him. Wait till the American press gets a hold of this. They massacred him last week. This weeks action will probably bury him.
I voted: NoRed Tories are not social conservatives. As the gap between the two factions continues to widen, it would be to Canada's benefit to adopt some form of Proportional Representative (PR) electoral system so that the many varied voices within our nation can be better represented. First Past the Post doesn't cut it anymore. Most western countries use some form of PR now.

Partisan trolls on social media can be harsh and create an unfriendly and sometimes unsafe space for political discourse. But, government efforts to sanitize political speech have put a damper on what Canadians are willing to say online. The UNPUBLISHED platform provides the tools and space for Canadians to engage more actively in our political system within a supportive and rules governed environment.
