Calgary city council prepares for housing hearing

Calgary’s city council is bracing for what is expected to be the largest public hearing in its history, a marathon meeting starting Monday that could stretch seven days and involve hundreds of people speaking against a proposal that would permit rowhouses and townhomes across the city.If the proposed blanket rezoning fails, the city’s access to hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding, including money from Ottawa’s Housing Accelerator Fund, could be at risk.

University of Alberta president Bill Flanagan defended what he called a difficult decision to call in the Edmonton police to clear a pro-Palestinian protest encampment on the weekend.Mr. Flanagan said he had received many messages expressing deep concern about the university’s actions. On Saturday morning, police officers moved in on protesters on the Alberta campus after notifying them that they were considered to be trespassing. Images circulated on social media of officers wielding batons advancing on protesters who scrambled out of their path.

A wildfire near Fort McMurray, Alta., almost quadrupled in size over the weekend, as dry conditions fuelled the blaze and brought back painful memories of one of the country’s costliest disasters eight years ago.On late Friday, Local officials put residents of northern Alberta’s oil sands industry hub and several nearby communities on alert to evacuate in case the out-of-control fire threatens populated areas. It was burning 16 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray on Sunday, though favourable winds pushed it away from the city for now.
