WestJet flight cancellations upend travellers’ plans over Canada Day long weekend

An unexpected strike by unionized mechanics at WestJet Airlines led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights over the Canada Day long weekend, upending the travel plans of more than 110,000 people across the country.As of Sunday afternoon, the Calgary-based airline said it had cancelled more than 800 flights, and planned to continue grounding its fleet until it was down to about 32 operating planes.

An Alberta man is in custody and facing serious charges after a teen was shot on his rural property over the weekend.RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff says two boys, ages 15 and 16, were on the property north of Edmonton on Saturday, when they were confronted by a man with a gun.The 16-year-old was shot and taken to hospital with life-threatening wounds.

A Vancouver labour lawyer says a group of British Columbia teachers has launched a human rights complaint against their union, saying the BC Teachers’ Federation “has engaged in and enabled antisemitism.”Paul Pulver, who says he represents BC Teachers Against Antisemitism, filed the complaint with the B.C.
