National ceremony in Ottawa will mark Truth and Reconciliation Day

September 30, 2024
The streets of downtown Ottawa are turning into a sea of orange with hundreds of people already in place on Parliament Hill ahead of a ceremony to honour the survivors of Canada’s residential school system and the children who never made it home. The event itself doesn’t begin until 3 p.m. ET, but people clad in orange shirts are already in the area for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Orange shirts have become a symbol of reconciliation, inspired by the story of residential school survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad, who has recounted having a brand new orange shirt taken from her on her first day at a residential school and never having it returned.
