But a look past the flexing torsos and crunching abs reveals details such as lockers, slacklines and heavy tires. Then, at a certain point, he brought equipment of his own “just to see what would happen,” he says. Most still don't, and that suits Juteau just fine. Other materials began to appear. Someone brought a vacuum and cleans the mat every week. No one knows exactly who. The city funds upkeep but individual users can donate money, too. But it’s not a requirement. A standout example of this type of exercise is the human flag pose – imagine hanging from a bar, and then turning the bar 90 degrees, maintaining the body in a straight line. “In my opinion, people that do calisthenics develop the most beautiful bodies of all,” says Alexia Dion, a gym-goer who works as a tattoo artist. There is a well deserved flourish of exhibitionism that goes along with much of the action. The sun streams into the space for a few hours a day, slicing between nearby condo towers, etching the bodies in gold. A former police officer involved in the case of an Ottawa man who died after a violent arrest had several testy exchanges with lawyers during Thursday’s cross-examination at a coroner’s inquest, and rejected suggestions that racism played a role in his actions.Former Constable David Weir is among those testifying at the inquest examining the circumstances of 38-year-old Abdirahman Abdi’s July 2016 death.Abdi died after police responded to a 911 call reporting that a man was groping women outside a coffee shop in Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood. The inquest has heard that Abdi appeared...

The Montreal Canadiens might be getting some reinforcements soon after Patrik Laine practiced with his teammates Wednesday for the first time since suffering a left knee sprain.Laine skated alone before joining the team for the first few drills at practice. He wore a noncontact jersey and left the ice after about 15 minutes.“It’s nice to have him back with us,” defenseman David Savard said. “It can feel like a long time when you’re not practicing with the team, you don’t see the guys as much. We’ve made an effort to keep him involved as much as possible during team meetings, but it’s...
