Alberta launches sheriff-led border patrol to boost security after Trump’s tariff pledge

Alberta is creating a new sheriff-led border patrol, moving on a promise from Premier Danielle Smith to use the power of provincial law enforcement to boost border security in the wake of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s tariff promise.The Interdiction Patrol Team, announced Thursday, will see dozens of Alberta sheriffs patrol immediately north of the shared border with the United States. The aim is to crack down on drug and gun smuggling, human trafficking and other illegal activities, said Mike Ellis, Alberta’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services, in an interview Wednesday.
There are no promises. But, thanks to the recent low temperatures, National Capital Commission has already begun to prepare the Rideau Canal Skateway.
