Renee Higgins used to wake up at 3 a.m. to drive from Sudbury, Ont., to Toronto for her fertility appointments, before turning around and making the four-hour trip home. She eventually underwent seven rounds of invitro-fertilization, estimating she and her husband paid about $100,000 for the treatments.“We remortgaged our house and then used that money to pay for this chance at having a child,” said Ms. Higgins, 36.
