Don’t lionize the Parkside vandal

January 3, 2025
A street in west-end Toronto has been hit by a very specific kind of vandalism. Three times in the last few weeks someone has targeted the speed camera on Parkside Drive, toppling it from the post where it stands beside the roadway. In the latest attack, the perpetrator not only cut it down but dragged the heavy object through the adjoining park and dumped it in a pond, leaving it sitting like a dead thing in the ice and muck.Although no one has claimed responsibility, the vandal is clearly trying to make a point. Many drivers are furious about the traffic congestion that plagues Toronto. They lay the blame on city hall for championing pedestrians and cyclists at the expense of the hapless, gridlocked motorist. Some may want to cheer the Parkside vandal for striking a blow on their behalf. They should resist the temptation.
