Watchdog investigating police-involved death of woman who fell from Toronto balcony

January 13, 2025
Authorities in Toronto are investigating a police-involved balcony death of a woman at 100 High Park Avenue, nearly five years after a similar police-involved death of another woman at the same scene gave rise to mass protests in the city.“We are investigating a custody death at that address,” said Kristy Denette, a spokeswoman for Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit, which investigates potential unlawful use of police force.Ms. Denette said that based on preliminary accounts, the SIU has heard four Toronto Police officers from 14 Division were speaking to a 44-year-old woman in an apartment and attempting to bring her into custody when she tried to flee.
