B.C. will only accept 1,100 new immigrant applications with nominations focusing on health care

The British Columbia government says the odds of new applications from immigrants looking to be accepted into its nominee program this year have dropped to near zero for anyone other than health workers or entrepreneurs after the federal government slashed the number of available slots.A bulletin from the province says it was only allotted 4,000 nominations this year, about half of what it had last year and substantially less than the 11,000 it wanted.
Alberta is without a chief medical officer of health as outbreaks of measles hit all regions of the province.Alberta Health, in a statement Tuesday, said Mark Joffe’s contract expired Monday. Premier Danielle Smith, in November, 2022, appointed Dr. Joffe to the role after firing Deena Hinshaw, who shepherded the province through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four pedestrians were injured when a car sped down a pedestrian walkway on Toronto Metropolitan University’s downtown campus in what police described as an intentional and targeted attack.Police said a car hit the victims on Nelson Mandela Way, a cobblestone pathway that is only open to foot traffic. Investigators believe the suspect, who fled the scene, may have been intending to target one person, and that victims included bystanders who were not connected.
