In a grimy London apartment, a Montreal writer typed the final page of his manuscript before immediately handing the work to his flatmate, an aspiring filmmaker from Toronto.“Not only is this the best Canadian novel ever written,” Ted Kotcheff told Mordecai Richler after reading the material in one sitting, “but one day I am going to go back to Canada and make a film of it.”
