Hour 1 of Ottawa Now for Tues. April 29th, 2025

April 29, 2025
Canada has decided who will lead their next government, and it’s the Liberals for a fourth straight time. 67 percent of eligible voters made their voices heard between advanced polling and Monday’s last call – that’s more than 19.2 million people. The voter percentage wasn’t even close to what we saw in March of 1958, but it did surpass the 2021 voter turnout by almost 5 percent. And with ballots still being counted today, those stats could soon increase. Meantime, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre have lost their respective seats in the House of Commons. For the time being, their political pathways are taking different directions, as Singh steps down and Poilievre stays on. CFRA’s Chris Holski examines the key takeaways and interesting factoids from Monday’s results. Plus, as the conversation now shifts to tariff talks with the United States, CTV’s Jack Richardson examines how Canada’s border towns are reacting to Carney’s election win.

Last fall, as archeologist Yves Chrétien was supervising a team digging at the site of a future hockey rink northeast of Montreal, a mini excavator unearthed pieces of cut stone.Formed under an ancient sea, the stones bore marks made by Indigenous people somewhere between 6,150 and 8,200 years ago. The discovery, found below the site of a former Shell distribution centre and 18th and 19th century farms, could help shed light on the region’s little-known prehistoric period.
