Canada Post strike: Union to review new offers submitted today

May 21, 2025
The Canada Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said it was on its way to receive proposals from Canada Post on Wednesday, days after it notified the corporation of a possible strike at the end of the week. “Our negotiating committee is currently on the way to receive the proposals,” said the union’s national president Jan Simpson in a news release on Wednesday. “Once the offers are officially presented, we will take the time to carefully review the details of the offers to ensure they align with the priorities and needs of our members. We will provide a comprehensive update once we’ve completed our review and analysis.” The proposals come after Canada Post received strike notice from the union on May 19 . The union said it would go on strike on Friday at midnight after failed negotiations. The union went on strike last November for 32 days after both parties could not come to an agreement. The union said it wanted “fair wages, safe working conditions, the right to retire with dignity, and the expansion of services at the public post office.” Canada Post employees were ordered back to work on Dec. 17 by the Canada Industrial Relations Board. Negotiations have continued since then with Canada Post saying it was committed to reaching an agreement to help it “better serve the changing needs of Canadians and provide good jobs to those who provide the service.” More to come. They didn’t want a spotlight shone on their dubious establishment.

I ’d known Abby for over twenty years. We always had a lot to talk about, with overlapping interests and a similar world view. She had a soothing energy and a keen sense of humour. Over the years, the occasional comment or dark joke made me wonder if we shared the same kind of damage, but I never probed. One day, we sat across from each other in a pub booth in Paddington, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. She ordered a glass of champagne for us both and we picked at some food. After some small talk, she asked me, “How are you?” There was something about her tone, the genuine concern in...

Rachel Smith is expecting to give birth any day in the epicentre of Canada’s worst measles outbreak in nearly 30 years. However, the Aylmer, Ont., mother is not worried about her health or the health of her baby because she’s fully vaccinated against the virus. Her cousin, Esther Wiebe, is not worried either, but for a different reason – she and her three unvaccinated children have already recovered from measles and are now immune.
