Ontario’s police watchdog investigating death of Indigenous man in Deer Lake

July 23, 2025

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal police-involved firearms incident in Deer Lake First Nation after a 38-year-old man died on Tuesday.

A media release from Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) says members from its Deer Lake detachment responded to a call for service and “an adult male was injured following an interaction with police officers.”

I have always considered that those individuals who do not walk on the left-hand side of the road and facing oncoming traffic when there is no sidewalk are taking their life into their own hands. My concern is heightened when they are walking with headphones blaring, staring at their phone or walking their dog with a long leash.
