Firefighters battle wildfires in Nova Scotia as blazes continue across Atlantic provinces

Officials say firefighters in Nova Scotia remain focused on tackling the northern side of the Long Lake wildfire in the Annapolis Valley, which is closest to homes.
Andrew Mitton, with Nova Scotia’s Department of Emergency Management, said during a news briefing on Wednesday that 61 structures in the vicinity have been outfitted with sprinklers as a form of fire protection.
Police interviewed suspect Tyler Robinson’s roommate and romantic partner, who identifies as transgender, according to officials, after Charlie Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University.
“The roommate told police that the roommate received messages from Robinson about the shooting and provided those messages to police,” according to charging documents that lay out Robinson’s alleged motive for killing the conservative activist.

Another man has been arrested in connection with a human smuggling operation that saw a migrant family freeze to death on the Canada-U.S. border near Emerson, Man.Fenil Patel was arrested Sept. 5 on an extradition request from the United States, the Justice Department in Ottawa said Tuesday. The 37-year-old faces a hearing this week in Ontario Superior Court.
