Smokers looking to quit should only use vapes as last resort, new guidelines say

Vapes or e-cigarettes should be a last line of defence for people looking to quit smoking, according to new Canadian guidelines.
The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care released recommendations Monday for methods to help people stop smoking cigarettes. It advises doctors to ask patients whether they smoke and to develop personalized cessation plans that include counselling, prescription drugs and nicotine-replacement therapies.
The Transportation Safety Board is set to issue its report today on a train collision at a north-end Montreal rail station in November 2023.

Statistics Canada is set to release its inflation figures for August this morning. A poll provided by Reuters shows economists expect the annual inflation rate rose to two per cent in August, from 1.7 per cent in July. Core inflation metrics, which are closely watched by the Bank of Canada because they strip out volatile categories, are forecast to remain around three per cent, the upper end of the central bank’s target range.
