Air Canada flight from Denver to Toronto cut short, forced to return after 'acrid smell' noted

September 2, 2025

An Air Canada flight from Denver to Toronto was forced to return to Denver International Airport on Sunday morning after reports of an “acrid smell” due to a possible electrical fire in a galley area.

Flight tracking websites show that the plane, an Airbus 220, spent just 37 minutes in the air before landing again. Flight 1038 left Denver at 7:40 a.m. and usually takes about three hours to reach Toronto.

An Air Canada spokesperson told National Post: “The aircraft landed safely, and the 117 passengers and five crew evacuated the aircraft using emergency slides as a precaution.”

The spokesperson added that one passenger had sustained a minor injury during the evacuation process.

“Passengers were provided with alternate travel arrangements as soon as possible that same day,” the spokesperson said. “The aircraft remains undamaged in Denver awaiting the replacement of the emergency slides before it returns to service.”

According to CBS News , the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
