Ottawa Now - Ontario's Premier hoping that Canada's Prime Minister will back the Highway 401 tunnel

September 17, 2025

Back in August, Ontario’s Premier organized a study to look into the viability of digging a tunnel under Highway 401 and through the GTA. More specifically, a tunnel from Brampton to Mississauga in the West End, and one from Scarborough to Markham in the East End. The endgame of Doug Ford’s plan: Alleviate congestion and the flow of commerce. But now, Ford is ramping up the intensity of this idea, encouraging Canada’s Prime Minister to back his vision. Is this gameplan an efficient solution to traffic congestion, let alone an affordable one? Matti Siemiatycki is a Professor of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto, and also serves as the Director of the university’s Infrastructure Institute. He joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
