Ottawa Now - How to achieve a delicate balance for today's healthy lunches (through the eyes of a teacher)

September 19, 2025

While many schools have designed nutrition policies to promote healthier lunch choices, enforcement often happens at the classroom levels, leading to confusion and frustration when students come home with a concerning letter. These days, heavily-processed snacks and sugary drinks are a no-go, but the way these rules are applied often varies. Should teachers take a deep breath and take their foot off the gas pedal? How do we achieve a happy medium while not hurting anyone’s feelings? Julie Findlay, who worked as a teacher for more than 15 years, follows a logical and simple approach when faced with this delicate situation. She encourages open and frequent dialogue with the teacher, parent, and child – adding that no situation is the same. She joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
