B.C. ostrich farmers make urgent appeal to Supreme Court to stop cull of flock

The ostrich farmers attempting to stop a government-ordered cull of their 400-bird flock in British Columbia’s Kootenay region have applied to the Supreme Court of Canada for a last-minute stay of the action while they wait to hear if the court will take up the case.
The owners of Universal Ostrich Farms Inc. sent an application to the Supreme Court on Monday, hours after staff with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency arrived on-site, flanked by dozens of RCMP officers to secure the small farm in Edgewood, B.C.
Alberta’s provincial health agency did not follow its own policies for two major contracts, one for procuring children’s pain medication from Turkey and another for opening a private surgical clinic in Edmonton, according to an independent review commissioned by Premier Danielle Smith’s government.Raymond Wyant, a retired judge from Manitoba, this week submitted his 43-page report examining alleged procurement and contracting problems at Alberta Health Services. The government made the report public Friday.
