Ottawa Now - UCDSB Chair supports provincial idea to modernize school governance model, but says local representation should be preserved

September 23, 2025

The Ford government has been seizing control of multiple school boards in Ontario, putting them under the control of Education Minister Paul Calandra. Out of the 4 most notable school boards to face this reality, Ottawa’s largest has been the focal point here in Canada’s Capital. These crackdowns have also put the future of school board trustees on thin ice, as OCDSB representatives remain locked out of their email accounts until further notice. Jamie Schoular is the Chair of the Upper Canada District School Board. He supports the Education Minister’s idea to examine and modernize our present-day governance model. At the same time, while the potential elimination of trustees is beyond his control, he is still advocating for local representation. Schoular joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
