Ontario releases draft criteria for special economic zones as opponents of Bill 5 call for clarity

The Ontario government says it is incorporating feedback from Indigenous communities into its draft criteria for special economic zones – which would allow the province to fast-track major development projects under a new law – but says it’s unlikely it will explicitly reference Aboriginal and treaty rights in regulations.
Still, the government says it will honour its constitutional requirements to consult with Indigenous people.
Ontario announced on Wednesday that 25 fertility clinics will receive the first round of funding as a part of its $250-million plan to reduce waiting lists for in vitro fertilization and “triple” the number of families that can access expensive fertility treatments.The announcement provided details from the province’s first major expansion of its Ontario Fertility Program, which launched in 2015 to help people struggling with infertility pay for procedures such as IVF.

Canada and the United States “are much more coordinated” than it may appear, says Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“There is still a very deep, enduring and reinforcing relationship between Canada and the United States. As Canadians, we benefit from that,” said Carney via video call to the U.S.-Canada Summit in Toronto on Wednesday.
The comments were made in conversation with Gerald Butts, the vice chairman of Eurasia Group, a political risk analysis and consulting company. Butts was former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s principal secretary from 2015 to 2019.
