Meet the Thunderjacks, UBC’s small but mighty loggers’ sports team

October 11, 2025

Loggers’ sports evolved out of the forestry industry more than a century ago, testing loggers’ skills throwing axes, sawing logs and chopping timber. As more formal competitions emerged, the University of British Columbia’s first loggers’ sports team formed in the 1980s.

The team’s current iteration, named the Thunderjacks, dates back to 2014 and competes against other university and college teams in Alberta, Montana, Idaho and California. The team also competes within the Canadian Loggers’ Sports Association, or CANLOG, on a professional level.
