Help shape rules protecting tenants from renovictions

October 17, 2025
Visit Engage Ottawa to share your feedback by Friday, October 31

The City of Ottawa needs your feedback as it develops a Rental Renovation Licence By-law to help protect tenants from unlawful renovation-related evictions, also known as renovictions.

A renoviction occurs when a tenant is unlawfully displaced from their rental unit under the pretense that repairs or renovations are needed, all without following the legislated process under the Residential Tenancies Act. In contrast to lawful evictions for renovation or repair, renovictions involve evictions done in bad faith, often to attract new tenants at higher rents.

Share your feedback with us through the Engage Ottawa questionnaire, which will remain open until Friday, October 31.

Your input will help shape the rules protecting tenants from unlawful evictions for renovation or repair, ensure tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities are understood and followed, and help contribute to rental housing stability and affordability.

For more information, visit Engage Ottawa or read the background article, Preparing for Ottawa’s Rental Renovation Licence By-law.
