Alberta students stage walkouts in protest over back-to-work order

Students around Alberta walked out of class on Thursday in protest of the provincial government’s decision to send teachers back to work after a nearly four-week-long strike.
The walkout happened a day after more the 700,000 students returned to school for the first time since Oct. 6, when teachers walked off the job amid unresolved collective bargaining with the provincial government.
Lansdowne 2.0 is headed to Ottawa city council for a final vote after the finance and corporate services committee voted in favour of the nearly $419-million development Thursday.

The law also prohibits students from wearing face coverings in a bid to strengthen secularism in schools.

A high school football player who sustained a severe spinal injury in a game earlier this month died in hospital Wednesday night, the Winnipeg School Division said Thursday.“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you that Grade 12 student Darius Hartshorne, a lineman for the Sisler Spartans, succumbed to his injuries last night,” the division said in a statement.
