Stay on track: How to keep sledding safer this season
Winter has arrived with colder temperatures and fresh new snow. Your first instinct may be to grab the sled or toboggan and glide down the hills but before you go, think safety first – including protecting your head and ensuring all children are accompanied by an adult.
The City of Ottawa and Ottawa Public Health want to remind you about some important sledding safety tips to protect you and your family this winter season.
Protect your headThe first and most critical safety tip is wearing proper head protection. Wearing a helmet will help protect your brain when sledding. Look for a hockey, ski or snowboard helmet for full head protection. To learn more about helmet safety, including tips for choosing the right helmet for an activity, visit the Ottawa Public Health website.
Sled only at approved hillsBefore you go, find an approved sledding hill at ottawa.ca/sledding. There are more than 70 approved locations across the city.
Always face forward when slidingNever go down the hill headfirst or on your back. Either sit or kneel on your sled so you have control and can see where you are going.
Make sure the route is clearBefore attempting to go down the hill, always check for hazards including other sledders, icy areas, trees, fences and roads. Never sled near ponds, lakes or rivers.
Be in controlSled during daylight and be mindful of things like your sled type, weather conditions and the steepness of the hill. Avoid sledding when it’s icy and make sure the hill is well lit if you are sledding at night. Choose a sled that is easy to control and avoid crazy carpets, saucers and inflatables.
With all those safety tips in mind, you and your family can grab your sled and helmets and safely enjoy the outdoor winter fun.
