His parents ran a beloved tavern there for decades, but the local fire chief couldn't save it

The historic building that housed the Douglas Tavern in tiny Douglas, Ont., burned to the ground overnight. Fire Chief Bill McHale's parents ran the popular gathering place for nearly half a century.
As January 2026 ends, the bill still hasn't been passed into law, and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing can't say when it will.
