Mariposa Festival co-founder Ruth Jones-McVeigh gave an enduring gift to Canadian music

On July 11, 2010, in Orillia, Ont., the folk duo of Ian Tyson and Sylvia Tyson reunited at the Mariposa Folk Festival for a surprise performance of their melancholic Canadiana classic Four Strong Winds. Watching the former husband and wife harmonize on the ballad about a failed romantic relationship, 83-year-old Ruth Jones-McVeigh had a tear in her eye.
She wasn’t alone.
As part of a push to sustain the struggling post-secondary sector, the province will inject new cash into colleges and universities and allow them to raise tuition fees.
