Reported hate crimes drop in Ottawa, still much higher than last decade

The hate crimes reported to Ottawa police in 2025 fell in number compared to the previous two years. Fifty people were charged based on those tips.

Ontario is examining legislation that would allow special constables to arrest and ticket drug users. Today, Ottawa City Council has voted 17-7 to endorse that legislation. It would also expand present-day enforcement powers to OC Transpo special constables, who would be able to arrest and fine people using drugs on public transit. The motion was moved by Rideau-Vanier councillor Stéphanie Plante. She joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
