Stephen Harper set to speak at gala honouring his 2006 election win

February 4, 2026

OTTAWA — Former prime minister Stephen Harper will deliver a speech on Wednesday evening at an event in Ottawa to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the election that put his party in power.

The gala comes in the middle of a week of events honouring the former prime minister in Ottawa. On Monday, Harper received a gold medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society in honour of his public service and then joined former prime minister Jean Chrétien on a panel at the event. On Tuesday, Harper called for Canadian unity as his official portrait was unveiled on Parliament Hill. Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at the unveiling, saying that Harper “brought composure, intellect and decisiveness to public life.”

On Thursday, Harper will participate in a panel moderated by Canadian historian Arthur Milnes at an event at Library & Archives Canada to formally launch his collection of papers and records from his time in politics.

The week of events comes on the heels of the Conservative convention in Calgary where leader Pierre Poilievre received an endorsement from 87.4 per cent of the party’s delegates.

Harper is scheduled to speak at 8:30 p.m. ET.

More to come.
