Ottawa Now - City councillor calls for bylaw against feeding wild animals

February 17, 2026

An Ottawa city councillor is calling for a bylaw against feeding wild animals, arguing that the innocent-looking practice can also attract rodents. Laura Dudas has organized a motion, which will be presented at City Committee on Thursday. Over at the City of Toronto, bird-feeders are fair game, but feeding wildlife on private and public property is prohibited. Similar bylaws are also in place for Brampton, Oakville, and Vaughn. And if you break the rules in Mississauga, you could face a maximum penalty of $100,000. So how far is Laura Dudas willing to go? The councillor for Orléans West-Innes joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
