See a hydrant, clear a hydrant!

February 20, 2026
The City of Ottawa encourages residents to help clear snow from around their local fire hydrants and to participate in the Hydrant Hero program.

With significant snowfall still on the ground and more on the way this weekend, the City of Ottawa wants to encourage residents to lend a helping hand – and a shovel.

When seconds count, firefighters need fast, unobstructed access to fire hydrants. By clearing snow from around fire hydrants you help first responders work quickly to protect you, your family and your community.

Anyone can be a fire hydrant hero. The City inspects and operates more than 23,000 fire hydrants and you can lend a helping hand to keep hydrants clear and accessible.

How you can help:

  • Clear snow all the way around a hydrant down to the base and create a path to the hydrant
  • Avoid piling snow on or against hydrants when clearing snow around your home.
  • If you’re unable to clear your hydrant, call 3-1-1.
  • Contractors are reminded not to pile snow over or against hydrants when clearing pathways and driveways in the winter.

Residents can receive a Hydrant Hero certificate. To request your electronic Hydrant Hero certificate, complete this form. Students can also request confirmation of their community involvement hours by contacting hydrants@ottawa.ca.
