Ottawa Now - The mission to revitalize the ByWard Market

February 19, 2026

The City of Ottawa is planning to pedestrianize streets in the ByWard Market, revitalize the historic ByWard Building, and eventually convert a Downtown parking garage into a ‘mixed-use destination’. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe unveiled the ByWard Market Action Plan during Thursday’s Downtown Ottawa Forum, outlining the city’s vision to refresh and uplift tourist-driving areas. It will take multiple years to complete and it will cost millions of dollars to do so. The ByWard Market, which was given Heritage designation in 1991, celebrates its 200th birthday next year. Kristy Cameron chats with Victoria Williston, the new Executive Director and Communications Manager for the ByWard Market District Authority. Then, we check in with Deek Labelle, who is the Manager and Co-Owner of The Laff.
