'Canada's got a great team, too': U.S. Republican senator says Olympic men's hockey game was 'well played'

March 6, 2026

It’s a far cry from the White House decision to post an image of a bald eagle trampling a Canada goose after the U.S. won Olympic gold at the recent men’s hockey final in Turin, Italy.

In the wake of that trash talk and U.S. President Donald Trump’s unsportsmanlike posts about the game on Truth Social , Republican Louisiana Senator John Neely Kennedy lauded both teams for their efforts.

“Well, we just had a great hockey game,” Kennedy said in a video he posted to the social media platform X on Thursday.

“United States versus Canada. United States won men’s hockey. United States won. And I’m very, very proud of our boys. It was a close, close game. Two-to-one in overtime.”

His video had been watched more than 357,000 times by Friday afternoon.

“Of course, we celebrated that victory and congratulated our U.S. team at the State of the Union address,” Kennedy said.

But he also wanted to mention Canada.

“It’s important to know that Canada’s got a great team, too. That was just a really good game. And it could have gone either way. And I so admire the people of Canada.”

Canada is embroiled in a trade war with the U.S. that’s been punctuated by Trump’s loose talk of annexing this country and turning it into the 51st state.

According to Kennedy, “some things get rocky a little bit between” Canada and the U.S., “but deep down, Americans love the people of Canada. And they’re smart and they’re hardworking, and they’re industrious and they’re our neighbours. And, we just appreciate them so much. And I just wanted to say to the members of the Canadian hockey team, well played.”

In the video, the senator said he’s “proud of America and our boys for winning, but I’m proud of the young men who played for Canada as well. And I’m going to say that.”
