Ottawa Now - New poll says strong majority of Canadians are calling for a U-16 social media ban
March 30, 2026
Almost 4 months ago, Australia banned social media for youth under 16 years of age. It was a landmark ban that sparked an important global discussion about the impact of these platforms, and how they can harm the mental health and safety of young people. One example was a recent landmark court case in California, where Meta and YouTube were both found liable in a social media addiction trial. And now, a new poll from the Angus Reid Institute suggests that Canadians are increasingly open to the idea of restricting kids access to social media, with 75 percent of respondents saying a 16-or-under ban should be implemented. Kristy Cameron chats with Shachi Kurl, the President of the Angus Reid Institute, on today’s Ottawa Now.
