Correctional officers in northern Ontario say separating inmates after assaults difficult due to overcrowding

The number of inmate-on-inmate assaults appears to be rising in the province, according to Ministry of the Solicitor General figures. The big concern in northern Ontario is violence fuelled by overcrowding and a lack of options to separate the person who was attacked from the perpetrator.

The unions representing faculty and support staff at Fleming College and St. Lawrence College say the decision to merge the two colleges blindsided workers and is the result of the province's failure to properly invest in post-secondary education.
