Hour 2 of Ottawa Now for Tues. April 14th, 2026

April 14, 2026

Ottawa Police say a driver has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle following a wild collision in front of an elementary school. The two-vehicle crash took place yesterday at Marie-Curie Elementary on Heron Road, which ended with one of the cars flipping onto its roof. There used to be a speed camera at the school, but it has since been taken away. Should tougher road safety measures be implemented? We pose that question to Alta Vista councillor Marty Carr. Meantime, political tides have shifted at the House of Commons, as the Carney Liberals have secured a majority rule. They only needed to win one of Monday’s 3 byelections to do so, largely thanks to 5 floor-crossings that benefited the Red Team. Last night, just for good measure, they took all 3 vacant ridings. And when asked if he was eager to head to the polls to sweeten that lead, Carney wasn’t interested, shifting his focus to bigger items on the agenda. CTV political commentator Scott Reid joins the show with his reaction. Plus, a new initiative from the Queensway-Carleton Hospital is connecting newborn babies without a family doctor to a primary care provider for the first two years of their lives. We dig deeper in Hour 2.

OTTAWA — Liberal MPs and former cabinet ministers Jonathan Wilkinson and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith are expected to resign their federal seats in the coming weeks, bringing Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to the majority threshold of 172 seats. With such a razor-thin majority and contentious decisions on the horizon, can Carney afford to lose other MPs such as former environment minister Steven Guilbeault? A well-connected Liberal source told National Post that Guilbeault had not yet made up his mind on his political future, and is giving himself time to see how things play out...
