Ottawa Now - City of Ottawa says speeding in school zones has gone up since November's photo radar purge

April 15, 2026

Since the Ford government’s speed camera purge last November, new data shows that Ottawa’s drivers are speeding in school zones more frequently. A recent report from Ottawa’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee says the removal of these cameras has decreased speed compliance and increased high-end speeding. This was highlighted by Tuesday’s midday collision on Heron Road, as a car flipped onto its roof just outside of an elementary school. What’s also alarming is that stop-arm cameras on school buses are catching dozens of drivers failing to stop for school buses on Ottawa’s roads. Orleans South-Navan councillor Catherine Kitts is the Vice-Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. She joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
