Ottawa Now - DND employees encouraged to work Mondays and Fridays to combat parking headaches

May 1, 2026

RTO mandates are one thing. Parking logistics are another. Once we get to July – just two months from now – federal government employees are expected to report to their office workstations 4 days per week. At the moment, it’s 3 days per week. However, DND employees are already struggling to find parking spots, and it’s been a recurring problem for many years. The facility is located at the old Nortel Campus, which houses 10,000 staff members. The problem with this formula: There’s only 5,000 parking spaces available. As a result, DND employees are being encouraged to work there on Mondays and Fridays, as the Tuesday to Thursday cycle causes an overwhelming demand for parking spaces. And if your car gets towed away, that’s at least $400 down the drain. Kristy Cameron checks in with June Winger, the National President of the Union of National Defense Employees. They represent 20,000 DND employees across Canada and nearly 3,000 of them reside at the Carling Campus.
