Ottawa Now - Is the massive World Cup bill worth the potential tourism payoff?

May 21, 2026

As the calendar flips to June, a trio of countries will be hosting World Cup games, and Canada is one of them. However, according to the latest forecast from the country's Parliamentary Budget Officer, the estimated cost per game is $82 million. Add it all up, and you get a massive $1 billion tab to pay off. That bill, by the way, is in line with public spending for previous World Cup events. So who pays for what? Well, $473 million is coming from the feds, while the other levels of government have been assigned to pay the rest of the tab. In Toronto, they planned to spend $380 million to host 6 matches, while B.C. planned to fork over $578 million during their 7 matches. Even if our businesses make a strong profit, and even if Ontario soccer fans are fired up for some later 'last calls', is it all worth it in the end? Kristy Cameron picks the brain of Moshe Lander, a Canadian economist and an Economics lecturer at Concordia University.
