Carney announces new measures to combat surging antisemitism

Speaking at a synagogue in Toronto on Monday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said antisemitism has surged to the levels not seen in the postwar period noting recent incidents including the firebombings of synagogues and bullets fired at Jewish schools. Carney said a new national unity council will assess what is driving antisemitism in Canada and improve research and data collection on hate incidents.

A coalition of groups have sent a letter to Premier Christine Fréchette, reiterating the call for the province to hold a public inquiry into racism and racial profiling within Montreal police. This demand is in connection with the allegations of racism that led to the police force investigating 16 officers at a police station in the city's Montréal-Nord borough.
