Ottawa Now - 360-high-resolution camera technology aiding officers in Brampton, but would they work in Canada's Capital?
June 2, 2026
New camera technology deployed in Brampton has aided Peel Police in over 200 investigations within the past year. The municipality has installed 360-degree high-resolution cameras, along with automated license plate recognition technology, at 50 intersections. The price tag comes in at $2 million. The cameras come from Genetec Incorporated – a Canadian security technology company – and they can read license plates with a nearly full field of vision. Could Ottawa benefit from this kind of technology, or is this just increased surveillance? Kristy Cameron poses that question to CTV public safety analyst Chris Lewis, who is also a former OPP Commissioner.
