Inquest jury into Thunder Bay Jail death of Ontario politician's nephew calls for decommissioning plan

A coroner’s jury has issued 22 recommendations aimed at Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General, also ruling that Kevin Mamakwa died by suicide in the Thunder Bay Jail in 2020. Jurors urged the ministry to develop and publicly release a plan to decommission the jail, and ensure it never be repurposed to incarcerate people. Earlier, Mamakwa's uncle, member of provincial parliament Sol Mamakwa, said the jail's a "death trap" that "needs to go."
