Toronto boy, 12, charged with attempted murder after police officer injured in hit-and-run

June 15, 2026

A 12-year-old boy is charged with attempted murder after a stolen vehicle struck a Toronto police officer early Monday, police said.

The boy faces charges including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation, failing to stop for police, assaulting a peace officer and leaving the scene of an accident, Toronto police said. He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Officers responded to a report of a vehicle theft near Donlands Avenue and O’Connor Drive shortly after 1 a.m., the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said. Two cruisers tried to box the vehicle on the Leaside Bridge, and as the driver fled he struck an officer who was outside his cruiser, the SIU said.

One officer fired multiple times to stop the car, which was carrying two other children, the SIU said. The agency said it could not yet say whether the shots were fired before or after the vehicle struck the officer.

The two other occupants were 12 and 13, the SIU said. The vehicle fled the scene before officers located it and the driver nearby.

The officer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries that police said were not life-threatening. He was later released, the SIU said. The boy was apprehended on foot and also taken to the hospital with serious injuries that the SIU said were not life-threatening.

The SIU is Ontario’s arms-length agency that investigates incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

The investigation is ongoing. Toronto police said more information will come in a media release.
