Ellwood House celebrates groundbreaking of 38 new affordable and accessible homes for seniors

Community leaders, senior elected officials, donors, project partners, parish leaders and members, residents and supporters gathered today to celebrate a major milestone for seniors housing in Ottawa as Ellwood House officially broke ground on its long-awaited extension project.

The expansion will add 38 new affordable and accessible homes for seniors, creating opportunities for older adults to age safely, independently and with dignity in a supportive and caring community.

The groundbreaking marks the beginning of a transformative project that will help address the growing demand for affordable seniors housing while strengthening the vibrant community that has flourished at Ellwood House for decades.

"Investing in Affordable Housing is an investment in individual and societal health," said Marlene Coffey, Executive Director, Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association. "Today, we celebrate the future residents whose lives will be enriched by this investment."

Located on the four-acre campus of the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Ellwood House is part of a unique community dedicated to serving people at every stage of life. The campus is also home to Braeside House, a residence for adults living with developmental disabilities; the Bloom Centre for Early Learning; and a City of Ottawa fire station. Together, these organizations contribute significantly to the social well-being and resilience of the Alta Vista community.

The extension project reflects the shared values of housing, inclusion, service, and community that have long defined the parish and its outreach ministries.

“Projects like Ellwood house make their communities better, and better communities benefit us all. Our government is proud to have been a part of making this happen. This is more evidence of what we can do, as a country, when we work together.” Said the Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament of Ottawa South.

“This project speaks to something every resident understands and that is the importance of having a safe, affordable place to call home, especially as we age. These 38 new homes at Ellwood House will help seniors stay in their community, maintain their independence, and live with dignity, surrounded by support and connection. The City of Ottawa is proud to work with our community partners to help make projects like this possible,” stated Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of Ottawa.

“Today we are building on the success of Ellwood House as we seek to care for seniors who are precariously housed. Three factors: aging, rent increase and fixed income, create a precipitous pathway to homelessness for these elders. Ellwood House Extension offers seniors safe, affordable, permanent housing for independent living. Just as importantly, Ellwood House offers a place to belong, a place that respects each person, a place to call home.” Said The Right Reverend Kathryn Otley, Bishop of Ottawa.

The Church of St. Thomas the Apostle has built a reputation as a welcoming and active community where worship, fellowship, and service come together. Through a wide range of programs and initiatives, the parish helps foster connection, belonging, and support for residents throughout the neighbourhood.

Among its many community initiatives are:

• Chat & Chew, a monthly luncheon program that provides affordable, nutritious meals and social connection for seniors.
• A thriving community garden, where volunteers grow fresh produce for the Heron Road Emergency Food Centre while creating opportunities for community participation and fellowship.
• A popular seasonal farmers' market, featuring local vendors, fresh produce, artisans, and entertainment throughout the summer months.
• A rich music program, hosting choirs, concerts, and community performances that bring people together through the arts.

These programs help create the sense of family and belonging that makes Ellwood House a special place to call home.

For future residents, the extension will offer more than affordable housing. It will provide access to a vibrant campus community where seniors can remain connected, engaged, and supported while maintaining their independence.

Today's celebration was made possible through the commitment and collaboration of government partners, donors, community supporters, parish members, volunteers, and advocates who recognize the importance of ensuring that older adults have access to safe, affordable housing options.

As construction begins, Ellwood House extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped bring this vision to life.

Together, we are building more than housing. We are building community. We are creating a place where older adults can age with dignity, maintain their independence, find friendship and support, and continue to thrive as valued members of our community.

Ellwood House is a non-profit seniors residence located on the campus of the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle in Ottawa.
