City seeking public input on commemorative naming proposals
The City is inviting residents for their feedback on three separate commemorative naming proposals to:
- Name Ball Diamond 1, located in Andy Shields Park, 1448 Meadow Drive in Greely to Victor Wootton Ball Diamond.
- Name the second-floor kitchen, located within the Hintonburg Community Centre, 1064 Wellington Street West in Ottawa to Paulette’s Kitchen.
- Name the Petrie Island East Bay Beach, located at 777 Tweddle Road in Cumberland to Phil McNeely Beach.
The City has been asked to name a ball diamond in Andy Shields Park, located at 1448 Meadow Drive to honour Victor Wootton Ball Diamond for his over 40 years of community service. Victor Wootton has supported young people and their families through his work as a Beaver leader with 1st Greely Beavers. He also served many years as a coach with the Rural Ottawa Softball Association and president of the Greely Softball Association – helping residents of all ages to participate and stay active.
Paulette’s Kitchen (Ward 15 – Kitchissippi)To honour her years of community service, the City has been asked to name the second-floor kitchen of the Hintonburg Community Centre, located at 1064 Wellington Street West to Paulette’s Kitchen. Paulette Dozois served as a dedicated school volunteer and activist, and was a board member of the Hintonburg Community Association (HCA) for 20 years. Every year at the HCA’s annual Artisan Craft Fair, Paulette’s welcoming and familiar presence in the kitchen always brought people together.
Phil McNeely Beach (Ward 1 – Orleans East-Cumberland)The City has been asked to name Petrie Island East Beach, located at 777 Tweddle Road, Cumberland, to Phil McNeely Beach, to honour Mr. McNeeley’s dedication years of public service with City of Ottawa and the Province of Ontario. Phil McNeely served the community for 14 years, first as a member of Ottawa City Council for Cumberland Ward (2000–2003) and then as MPP for Ottawa–Orléans (2003–2014). During this time, he supported initiatives that improved residents’ lives, including the purchase and development of Petrie Island and the “McNeely Amendment,” which kept cigarettes out of children’s sight in retail outlets. In his retirement, he continues to stay involved with Petrie Island initiatives and is a member of the Petrie Island Canoe Club’s building committee.
