Ottawa Now - Despite a recent drop in car thefts, 8-in-10 Canadians feel their vehicles remain a magnet for car thieves

July 22, 2026

A new survey shows that 8-in-10 Canadians feel their vehicles are vulnerable to theft, despite a recent drop in car thefts nationwide. Data from Angus Reid and Équité Association reveals that, while thefts did decrease in 2025, thieves are using advanced technology to bypass standard security systems. One of those tools is a ‘key fob relay attack’. And despite the aforementioned decline in thefts, over 33% of the 47,000 vehicles that were stolen in 2025 have yet to be returned to their registered owners. Experts say that a takedown in modern organized crime requires high-tech prevention, and most Canadians are calling on the feds to mandate stronger anti-theft technology in all new vehicles. Lorraine Sommerfeld, a Driving.ca columnist, joins Kristy Cameron on Ottawa Now.
