Ottawa Now - Crowds of frustrated flood victims sound off after getting rejected access to DRAO relief

July 17, 2026

After weeks of waiting and hoping, Ottawa residents finally heard from the Ford government today as to which areas were eligible for provincial relief from the Canada Day floods. According to the 3-1-1 database, over 7,000 calls were received following the July 1st downpour. But for many who live in the hardest-hit sections, a foul smell was in the air after they read Friday's press release, as they did not qualify for the latest string of DRAO funding. The conversation starts with Nepean MPP Tyler Watt, who has kickstarted another open letter to the Ford government to take further action. We also hear from an emotional Catherine in Bells Corners, who fears that she might have to sell her house and declare bankruptcy. Her house, and recently renovated basement, was hit hard by the storm. At the moment, she is ineligible for DRAO coverage. Then, we check in with Bay Ward councillor Theresa Kavanagh, who is once again baffled and frustrated with the province. And then, we hear from College Ward councillor Laine Johnson, who insists that this conversation isn't over and vows to relentlessly fight to get more help for her residents.
