Hour 1 of Ottawa Now for Fri. August 28th, 2026

August 28, 2026

Kristy Cameron has returned from her vacation! It was…eventful. More on that later. But as Canada continues its tug-of-war with the United States, business owners in both countries are feeling the burn, and they are collectively worried about what the future holds. A ski resort in Jay, Vermont recently posted a message on Instagram, calling for Canadian tourists to come back. That’s because it relies heavily on its strong community of Canadian skiers, riders, and visitors – fewer of whom have been dropping by since the trade war began last year. We check in with Steve Wright, the President and General Manager of Jay Peak Resort, in Hour 1. Turning our attention to local news, more than 60 percent of drivers have been speeding through Ottawa school zones this Summer – 9 months after the province’s ban on photo radar cameras kicked in. New data from the City of Ottawa shows that average speeds, compared to 2025, are 13 kilometres-per-hour faster at eight former speed enforcement locations. In short, compliance has plummeted. We dig through the data with Beacon Hill-Cyrville councillor Tim Tierney. Plus, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers at Petrie Island have spent the entire Summer gathering turtle eggs and keeping them safe in incubators. Now, those eggs are hatching, and the tiny turtle babies are ready for the Ottawa River.
